Staying Safe: Risks to Watch for in Work Zones
Anna Kaluzny

National Work Zone Awareness Week, held from April 21-25, shines a spotlight on the risks and challenges workers face in construction zones. These environments are fraught with potential dangers for workers and anyone near the work zone; understanding these risks is vital for preventing accidents.

As a workers' compensation lawyer, I have witnessed how devastating these incidents can be, from life-altering injuries to overwhelming legal and financial challenges. This week serves as an ideal opportunity to explore the common hazards of work zones and highlight ways to prioritize safety for everyone involved.

Falls

One of the most significant risks in construction zones is falls. Properly fitted safety harnesses are crucial for preventing injuries. When these harnesses fail, the consequences can be catastrophic. It's important to ensure that harnesses are well-maintained and that anyone not working is unable to enter areas where falls are a risk. Regular inspections are a must.

Caught Between Equipment

Accidents involving heavy machinery are all too common—they underscore the importance of maintaining clear communication and staying aware of equipment blind spots. Workers should use hand signals or radios to communicate clearly and regularly check to ensure paths are clear.

Tripping Hazards

Unsecured tools or debris can lead to significant injuries when left unchecked in a workspace. Regularly maintaining a clean, organized area is key. Workers should always put away tools and dispose of debris promptly to reduce tripping risks.

Electrical Hazards

Electrical hazards such as exposed wiring pose deadly risks on construction sites. Routine equipment inspections and strict adherence to lockout/tagout procedures are essential in preventing electrical accidents.

Limited Visibility

Dust, debris, or poor lighting can obscure potential dangers, leading to incidents on site. Providing workers with high-visibility gear and investing in better lighting solutions can significantly enhance workplace safety.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a work zone, it's important to know that you don’t have to face the aftermath alone. Contact a workers' compensation lawyer to understand your rights and explore your options. Prioritizing safety in work zones is not just a necessity but a responsibility we all share.
